Novotna, Gillas earn Women’s Tennis All-ACC Academic Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Natalie Novotna and freshman Samantha Gillas have been named to the 2019 Women's Tennis All-ACC Academic Team as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Novotna played all season at the one, finishing with an 18-18 overall record on the year to finish ranked No. 111 in the final ITA singles standings. In addition, the biochemistry and chemistry major had an 11-12 record in doubles, finishing No. 53 in the final rankings. During the season, Novotna won the Dick Vitale Clay Court challenge and had wins in matches against No. 15 Florida State, No. 19 Miami and No. 22 Wake Forest. She added a doubles win at the No. 1 against the nation's then-ranked No. 16 duo.

This marks Novotna third nod to the All-ACC Academic team in as many seasons with the Hokies.

Gillas had a solid rookie season, tallying a 27-12 overall mark on the year with a 15-10 record, playing primarily at the three and four. The human development major added wins in matches against No. 14 Virginia, No. 32 Syracuse, No. 47 Boston College and No. 12 NC State.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
