Tech student-athletes close academic year with strong spring semester

BLACKSBURG – The 2019 spring semester was an outstanding one for Virginia Tech's student-athletes, as 323 out of the 530 student-athletes on sport rosters earned a 3.0 grade-point average during the semester. That number represents 61 percent of Tech's total student-athlete population.

In all, 192 student-athletes made the Dean's List. Those who make the Dean's List finished with a 3.40 GPA or better for the semester. Thirty of Tech's student-athletes earned a 4.0 during the spring semester.

In addition, 299 student-athletes now maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Ten of those maintain a 4.0. Overall, Tech's student-athletes are continuing their gains built in previous semesters. The overall student-athlete GPA for the spring semester was a 3.08 and the overall cumulative GPA of Tech's student-athletes is 3.06 following the conclusion of the spring.

Tech's individual sport teams performed strongly in the classroom as well. Eighteen of the 22 varsity teams achieved a 3.0 GPA or better following the spring semester, and 16 maintain a 3.0 or better.

From a team perspective, the teams with the top GPAs from the spring semester were women's tennis (3.73), women's cross country (3.64), men's tennis (3.51), women's soccer (3.50), men's basketball (3.48), women's golf (3.45), women's swimming and diving (3.41), volleyball (3.32), women's basketball (3.31), lacrosse (3.18) and women's track (3.18).

In addition, several of Tech's student-athletes and teams received recognition from the ACC for their academic excellence this fall semester.
