Amanda Hollandsworth qualifies for U.S. Women’s Open

Virginia Tech women's golfer Amanda Hollandsworth shot a two-round total of 1-under 141 on Tuesday to win a sectional qualifier and earned a berth in the 2019 U.S. Women's Open Championship, to be played May 30 – June 2 at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina.
 
The 1-under total won medalist honors for Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia. The sectional qualifier was played at the Springfield Golf and Country Club in Springfield, Virginia. Hollandsworth becomes the first Virginia Tech women's golfer to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open.
 
Two berths in the championship were up for grabs in Springfield and Hollandsworth defeated Karoline Stormo of Kent State by two strokes to win the tournament. Stormo claimed the second available spot for the Open in a field that included amateurs and professionals.
 
Hollandsworth held the lead after the morning round, where she shot a 2-under 69. She birdied three of the last five holes in the first round. In the afternoon round, Hollandsworth carded a 72.
 
Teammate Emily Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, also competed in Springfield today. Mahar tied for 20thwith a 153.
 
Hollandsworth and the Hokies will travel to Norman, Oklahoma over the weekend to compete in the NCAA Norman Regional May 6-8 at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Club.
