Hokies finish 11th at Augusta Haskins Award Invitational

Day Two - Sunday

The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a three-round total of 5-over 869 and finished in 11thplace at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played this weekend at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
 
Tech was fourth after the first round on Saturday with an 8-under 280. The Hokies shot a 294 in the second round on Saturday and 295 in the final round on Sunday.
 
Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, led the Hokies in Augusta, tying for 16thplace with a 3-under 213. Cameron Young of Wake Forest took medalist honors with a 19-under 197.
 
Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia tied for 42ndat 219 and Connor Johnson Jr., and Cameron Moore, both freshmen from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 53rdat 221. Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, tied for 56that 222. Johnson's 72 was the Hokies' low score of the final round.
 
Wake Forest took the team title with a 36-under 828, three strokes ahead of South Carolina and six strokes ahead of Texas. Arkansas was fourth at 845, Notre Dame was fifth at 853, host Augusta was sixth at 855, Illinois was seventh at 858 and Mercer was eighth at 861. UCF was ninth at 862 and Houston was 10that 864, five strokes ahead of the Hokies. USC Aiken was 12that 871, Northern Illinois was 13that 875, Georgia State was 14that 897 and Air Force was 15that 901. 
 
The Hokies wrap up the regular season next weekend, as they compete in the Stitch Intercollegiate April 12-13. The tournament will be played at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.


Day One - Saturday

The two-day event is being played this weekend at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, leads the Hokies after the first two rounds. He is tied for 12thwith a 4-under 140 and trails leader Cameron Young of Wake Forest by 12 strokes. Burgess shot a 4-under 68 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon.
 
Drew Brockwell, a freshman from Chesterfield, Virginia and Cameron Moore, a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, are tied for 38that 145. Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, is tied for 47that 146 and Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 61stat 149. Brockwell shot a 5-under 67 in the morning round, the lowest round of his collegiate career and the lowest round for a Hokie so far during the spring portion of the schedule.
 
Wake Forest holds the team lead with a 29-under 547, two strokes ahead of Texas and 10 strokes ahead of Arkansas. South Carolina is fourth at 558, host Augusta is fifth at 567 and Mercer is sixth at 569. Illinois is seventh at 572 and USC Aiken is eighth at 573, one stroke ahead of the Hokies, Cougars and fighting Irish. Northern Illinois is 12that 580, UCF is 13that 581, Georgia State is 14that 593 and Air Force is 15that 600. 
 
The final round will be played on Sunday morning. Tech will be grouped with USC Aiken and Illinois and will tee off from the first tee beginning at 8:30 a.m.
