CORAL GABLES, Fla. – With the match tied, 24th-ranked Miami was able to hold off 43rd-ranked Virginia Tech for a 4-3 win on Friday evening at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Hokies (15-6, 5-4 ACC) took the doubles point to get out to the lead after Henrik Korsgaard and Ryan Kros paired up for the 6-4 win at one. On court two, Jason Kros and Brandon Perez were tied at 6 and trailed 4-1 in the breaker before rallying to win it 7-6(5), securing the point for the Hokies.
Tech got on the board quickly in singles as Korsgaard rolled past Francisco Bastias 6-0, 6-2 on court two. The Hurricanes cut into the lead, winning the match on court three.
The Hokies pushed their advantage to 3-1 off a big win from 66th-ranked Jason Kros on court on. Trailing 4-1 in the first set, the Tech senior rallied to win it 6-4 over No. 36 Adria Soriano Barrera. Jason Kros controlled the second set, winning it 6-1.
Miami responded, tying it at 3 all with wins on courts six and four.
The deciding match came down to court five where Tech's Evan Fragistas squared off against Franco Aubone. In the first set, the two kept it close and were tied at 5 before the Hurricanes' player held on to win it 7-5. Fragistas jumped out to the early 4-0 lead in the second set, but Aubone battled back, tying it at 4 before the Hokies' freshman won the final two games to take it 6-4. The final set opened with six straight break points before Fragistas held on serve to go up 4-3. Aubone was able to close out the set, winning it 4-3 to claim the match for Miami.
Virginia Tech remains in the Sunshine State to face No. 31 Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee.
