SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Down five goals with 17 minutes to play, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team rallied to score the game's final four goals to create late drama in Syracuse, but it wasn't enough to knock off the Orange, as the Hokies fell 14-13.
With the result, Tech falls to 8-6 on the season and 1-3 in the ACC.
The Orange scored the game's first four goals in four minutes, forcing a timeout before Tech could get settled using a completely new starting lineup from last week's game.
Petty led the Hokies in scoring once again, with five goals, which takes her season total to 51, only the eighth time a Virginia Tech player has reached that mark.
Julia Bolte had five assists on the afternoon her season high which also ties her career best set last season against Campbell.
Emma Harden scored two goals, as did Taylor Caskey, taking her career tally to 100 points.

Quoting Coach Sung
- Due to disciplinary reasons, we didn't use our starters for a good portion of the game. Once we got the whole defense in there we limited them to four goals. Games aren't won on gameday, and unfortunately our decisions hurt us today.
- On the field, I thought that Paige played well and Julia Bolte was good feeding all day with all of her assists.
- I think that's a game that we could have had, but I am pleased with the effort and the fight that we showed.
Inside the box score
- Tech outshot the Orange 27-26, with both teams having 20 shots on goal
- The Hokies forced 18 Orange turnovers
- Tech continued their great play on the clear converting 13 of 15. The team is eighth nationally in that category.
Game Notes
- Two Hokies, Julia Byrne and Caroline Barwick made their first career starts against the Orange.
- For the second consecutive season the two squads battled to a one-goal game after 2018's double overtime thriller. It was the fourth one-goal game of the season. Tech is 2-2 in those games.
- Freshman Sara Goodwin, from nearby Baldwinsville, New York dished out an assist and had one caused turnover.
What's next
- The Hokies will continue their travels at No. 4 Notre Dame on April 7. That game will begin at noon, with coverage available on ACC Network Extra.
