Opens in a new window Final box score

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS.– Virginia Tech scored the game's first goal and led 6-5 with 13 minutes to go in the first half before Carolina tied the game and would go on to a 19-9 victory in the ACC tournament Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.

North Carolina moves on to the semifinal round on Friday, April 26 against the winner of the Notre Dame-Duke contest.

Tech's Sara Goodwin opened the scoring in the first 90 seconds moving in from the right side of the scoring area.

The first part of the half went according to plan for John Sung and the Hokies who held a lead and were taking care of the ball going 9 for 9 on clear attempts. By the half, Carolina had stuck their nose out in front and led 10-8. In the opening period, the Heels led 13-6 on the draw circle and had outshot the Hokies 21-12, however all of Tech's shots were on target.

Paige Petty led the team in scoring once again with four tallies, her 13th hat trick of the season.

Emma Crooks, back in the lineup and on the draw after missing the Virginia game last week, came up with six draws and also scored twice.

Emma Harden reached 100 career points with her assist in the second half. The grad student also scored twice in what would be her final appearance.

She joins three other Hokies, Petty, Taylor Caskey and Julia Bolte who all reached that mark earlier in the season.

The senior class graduates with 38 wins the most of any class in school history.

Quoting Coach Sung

  • I thought that we played a really good 30 minutes that first half. We were shooting well and doing the things that we needed to do to be successful. Then in the second, Carolina, they're a good team and kind of got on a run to pull away. But, I'm proud of the way we played. We knocked their All-ACC goalie out of the game at one point, which was a goal of ours.
  • The future here is bright, I know it is and sometimes we have to go through these ups and downs like this year. The growth that I have seen is really unbelievable all across the board. I'm thankful to these seniors who have stuck around especially our grad students Mary Claire Byrne and Emma Harden. Congratulations to Emma who got her 100thcareer point today, that's really special and I'm glad that she was able to get it here in her last game.
