CARY, N.C. – With the match tied at 3-3, freshman Rita Pinto clinched the point that gave the 13th-seeded Virginia Tech women's tennis team the 4-3 win over 12th-seeded Clemson on Wednesday afternoon at the ACC Women's Tennis Championship in Cary, North Carolina.
Pinto dropped the first set 6-4 to Clemson's Alex Angyalosy. The two played a close match in the second set leading to a tiebreaker, where Pinto rallied from down 4-1 to win 6-straight points, securing the set 7-6(4) and forcing a third. In the final set Pinto controlled it, winning 6-1.
Clemson got out to the lead early in the match after picking up the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
The Hokies got on the board first in singles with Samantha Gillas winning on court three, 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match at 1-all. On court four, Elizabet Danailova got a 6-0, 6-2 win that gave the Hokies a 2-1 lead.
Clemson tied it at 2-all shortly after with a win on court two. Nina Sorkin regained the lead for the Hokies with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court six.
The Tigers secured a win on court one that sent the deciding match to Pinto on five.
The Hokies will be back on the court Thursday, April 17th against 5th-seeded Miami at 2:30 p.m.
