Tech falters against top-ranked North Carolina

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team fell to top-ranked North Carolina 7-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final regular season match of the year. 
 
The Tar Heels (26-1, 14-0 ACC) got out to the lead after securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. North Carolina clinched the match after winning in straight sets on courts one, two and three. 
 
Tech's Rita Pinto got a 6-3 win in the first set over No. 125 Jessie Aney on court five. The UNC player came back to take the second, 6-1. In the super tiebreaker, Aney got the win 1-0(4). 
 
On court four, Elizabet Danailova took UNC's No. 36 Cameron Morra to a tiebreak in the opening set but ultimately fell 7-6(8) before dropping the second set 6-2.
 
Prior to the match, the Hokies recognized senior Sarah Baron.
 
The Hokies will be back on the court this week at the 2019 ACC Women's Tennis Championship in Cary, North Carolina. Tech is the 13th-seed in the field and will face 12th-seeded Clemson at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17.
