(DAY ONE)
Senior Rachel Pocratsky and Freshman Jacory Patterson won event titles for the Virginia Tech track and field teams on the first day of the Tennessee Relays at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
After a week off from outdoor competition, Pocratsky was in good form as she won her first event title of the outdoor season when she crossed the finish line in a time of 4 minutes, 20.10 seconds.
Patterson was also coming off a week without competition, but that didn't stop him as he placed first with the second fastest 200-meter dash in Tech history with his time of 20.67 seconds, which is currently tied for 14th in the country.
"Jacory raced against an Olympian in Rondel Sorillo," Tech sprints coach Tim Vaught said. "For him to race against a guy that ran for his country and was an NCAA champion, being able to beat him was great. For him to open up that fast, it shows me that he's going to be able to run a lot faster in the 400."
Sprints
Freshman Miles Green shaved over two tenths of a second off his previous personal best (52.49) as he finished second in the 400-meter hurdles and moved to seventh in the record book with his time of 52.22.
"I think Miles put together a good race," coach Vaught said. "That was the first time he executed and ran a clean first part the race."
Nykah Smith ran the 200 for the first time this season and rose to the occasion. The Freshman moved to No. 5 in the record book as she tallied a time of 23.56. Kennedy Dennis collected a time of 24.06 seconds.
"I told Nykah her in the warm-up that the way that she has been training, she should be able to run 23.6," coach Vaught said. "She went out there and ran 23.56 which was an all-time PR for her."
On the men's side of the 200, Cole Beck placed ninth as he ran an all-time best 20.99 seconds.
"That was Cole's first time breaking the 21 second barrier," coach Vaught said. He's always wanted that and he was super happy about it."
Michael Davenport tallied a time of 10.59 in the 100-meter dash, while Joseph Tay ran 10.73 for a new outdoor personal best.
In the 100 on the women's side, Kanajzae Brown set an all-time personal best and placed sixth with her time of 11.51.
"Kanajzae's race looked really good," coach Vaught said. "Her time is going to put her in the top 5 in the ACC. It was good for her and good for her confidence."
In her first meet of the outdoor season, Imagine Patterson ran 1:00.93 to place seventh in the 400 hurdles.
