Tech 23rd in latest Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech currently stands 23rd in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings released Thursday morning.
 
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based athletics department that achieves success in many sports, both men's and women's. Each institution is awarded points in a pre-determined number of sports for men and women.
 
The Hokies have 430.33 total points following the latest update, which includes points accumulated from the men's basketball team's Sweet 16 appearance. Also, the Tech wrestling program earned points following its 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, and the women's indoor track team earned points following its 15th-place finish at the NCAA's indoor meet. In addition, the Tech men's and women's swimming and diving programs amassed points toward Tech Athletics' overall total.
 
The latest standings already included the Hokies' total points from the fall – ones that came from NCAA appearances by the Tech women's cross country, women's soccer and men's soccer. The football team's bowl appearance also was factored into the standings.
 
Eight ACC teams currently rank in the top 25 of the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.
 
Tech finished the 2017-18 academic year at No. 28 overall in the final standings with 735.50 points – the athletics department's best finish ever.
