GREENSBORO, N.C. – With both players playing vital roles in [RV] Virginia Tech softball's upset of No. 8 Georgia last weekend, Kelsey Bennett and Carrie Eberle were named Co-Player and Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
It marks the second time this year that the Hokies (16-3) have swept the awards in the same week, matching Feb. 12 when Caitlyn Nolan and Keely Rochard accomplished the feat.
Bennett and Eberle (8-1) were key in Tech's 4-1 record last week, defeating Radford (6-9) on its home field 10-0 in the first midweek tilt of the season and following it up with a 3-1 showing at the Bulldog Classic. The 7-6 extra-inning win over the Bulldogs (18-2) marked the first road win over a ranked opponent by Tech since 2013.
Bennett got it going early last week, hitting a home run in her first two games at Radford and Georgia. She would also finish strong, racking up her third homer of the week versus UAB on Sunday. She finished with a .417 batting average and 1.167 slugging percentage with five hits, four RBIs and three walks, while making eight assists at third base.
Eberle went 2-0 over the weekend, holding UGA to three earned runs while not allowing an earned run to the Blazers on her way to nine strikeouts and only two walks. She owned a 1.47 ERA in her two outings of 14.1 innings pitched.
Earlier on Tuesday, Tech for the second time this season was receiving votes in both major poll – NFCA and USA Softball.
The Hokies will play host to Georgia Tech (14-6) this weekend in a three-game series, starting on Friday at 6 p.m. ET at Tech Softball Park to open league play.
