Tech falls at the hands of fourth-ranked UNC 19-5

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech had an opportunity to end a long streak against North Carolina Wednesday afternoon and hung tough for the first 12 minutes or so where the game was tied, but couldn't sustain the effort as the Hokies feel to the No. 4 Heels 19-5 at Thompson Field.

The loss moves Virginia Tech to 8-5 on the season snapping a four-game winning streak. The Hokies are 1-2 in conference play.

Then after Emma Crooks won the draw she and Paige Petty played a give-and-go that led to Crooks' goal just 10 seconds later to tie the game. Crooks would double up at 18:43 to tie the game once again, the last time that the Hokies would be able to do that.

Carolina went on a six-goal scoring run to end the period and headed into the locker room up 9-3.

Julia Bolte scored the first goal of the second frame before the Heels reeled off five straight again.

The Tar Heels were led by seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) from Jamie Ortega and eight points (4 goals and 4 assists) from Katie Hoeg. In goal, Taylor Moreno made 15 saves.
