Tech sends 11 to NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team is set to send 11, one of the highest number of competitors in program history, to the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, beginning Wednesday in Austin, Texas.
 
Representing the Hokies are: seniors – Ian Ho, Jake Lamparella, Ben Schiesl and Norbert Szabo; sophomores - Lane Stone, Sam Tornqvist and Thomas Hallock; and freshmen - Antani Ivanov, Blake Manoff, Henry Claesson and Noah Zawadzki.

COMPETING FOR THE HOKIES
Antani Ivanov – The Virginia Tech freshman has already etched his name in the Hokies record book, recording a school record in the 200 fly at ACCs to finish in third place at the conference championships. He enters the event with the 10th fastest time in the field. In addition, he helped set a school record in the 800 free relay.

Blake Manoff – Another freshman with his name already in the Hokies record book with the second fastest time in the 200 fly this season. He is also a member of the school record holding 800 free relay team that claimed bronze at the ACC Championships.

Lane Stone – The Hokies sophomore broke his own records this season in the 500 free and the 1650 free while also setting a new Tech record in the 200 free. He claimed bronze in the 500 freestyle at the ACC Championships and holds the 11th fastest time entering into NCAAs. In addition, Stone is a member of the 800 freestyle relay team.

Norbert Szabo – Virginia Tech senior makes his fourth consecutive trip to the NCAAs for the Hokies. He claimed the bronze medal in the 200 IM at this year's ACC Championships and is a member of the bronze medal, Tech record holding 800 free relay team. Szabo enters the week ranked 20th in the 200 IM.

Sam Tornqvist – The Hokies sophomore is making his first trip to NCAAs after a standout season. He A finaled for Tech at ACCs in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back. In addition, he entered the Tech top-5 times list in the 100 and 200 back as well as the 200 and 400 IM.

Ben Schiesl – The senior has been strong for the Hokies all season earning three ACC Diver of the Week honors en route to claiming bronze in the 1-meter at the ACC Championships. He finished third in the 3-meter at Zones and was fifth on 1-meter.

Noah Zawadzki – The Tech freshman enters the field after taking first in platform at Zones. He finished fifth at ACCs in the same event as the only freshman to reach the finals.

800 Free Relay: Antani Ivanov, Norbert Szabo, Blake Manoff, Lane Stone – 6:16.08
The Hokies set a school record and took home bronze at the ACC Championships. They enter NCAAs with the 12th fastest time in the field.
 
200 Free Relay: Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock, Henry Claesson, Ian Ho – 1:17.41
Tech broke the program record in the event with a team that is represented by two senior veterans in Lamparella and Ho as well as sophomore Hallock and freshman Claesson. Tech enters the competition with the 18th fastest time.
 
400 Free Relay: Jake Lamparella, Ian Ho, Thomas Hallock, Lane Stone – 2:51.23
The Hokies again set a school record at ACCs, turning in an impressive swim on the final night of competition that broke the previous mark by almost three seconds. Tech finished in fourth with the NCAA A cut time and enters the week with the 19th fastest time.
