BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's tennis team picked up its third consecutive ACC win as the Hokies knocked off 44th-ranked Georgia Tech 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Virginia Tech (12-5, 3-3 ACC) took the early lead as the Hokies secured the doubles point to start the match. Carlo Donato and Alex Ribeiro paired up for the 6-1 win at three while Jason Kros and Brandon Perez had the 6-2 decision on court two.
Donato pushed the Hokies to a 2-0 lead in the match as he downed Chris Yun in straight sets on court four, winning 7-6(3), 6-2. The rest of the matches between the teams would go to exciting third sets.
Georgia Tech (8-8, 3-4 ACC) got on the board with a win on court six, but the Hokies responded. Henrik Korsgaard fell in the first set 7-5 to Phillip Gresh, but the Hokies junior responded to take the second 6-4. In the third, Korsgaard trailed by two early in the set before rallying to win the match 6-3 and give the Hokies a 3-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets again scored, winning the match at three, leaving deciding matches on courts one and five. Ultimately the deciding match played out on court one where No. 56 Kros squared off against No. 30 Carlos Divar. The Hokies senior won the first set 7-5, but Divar responded, securing the second in a tiebreak 7-6(5). Kros rolled in the final set to win it 6-0, clinching the Hokie win.
