BLACKSBURG – Tied at four after six innings, the Bryant Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and held on to hand the Virginia Tech baseball team its first loss of the season on Friday night in non-conference action at English Field at Union Park.
The Bulldogs (3-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the third, scoring an unearned run in the first and adding three in the third, with the big hit a two-out, two-RBI double off the bat of Chris Wright.
Tech (7-1) stormed back in the home half of the third to tie the game. Nine Hokies came to the plate, with the first three starting the rally by all reaching base. With one out, Kerry Carpenter drew a bases-loaded walk to score Tanner Thomas and Carson Taylor singled home two with two outs to make it a 4-3 contest. Nick Biddison followed with an RBI single and the game was tied.
The Hokies had a couple of chances – two on with one out in the fifth, and the bases loaded with one out in the sixth – to break the tie, but in both frames, Bryant was able to turn a double play and end the threat.
The Bulldogs were the ones to finally break the knot as they used four straight singles in the seventh to plate a pair of runs, with the second being another unearned run.
