BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech men's tennis team downed 44th-ranked Duke in a close 5-2 match on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech (10-5, 1-3) fell behind after the Blue Devils (6-8, 0-3) claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Court two went unfinished once doubles was decided.
The Hokies quickly responded in singles as Alex Ribeiro claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Catalin Mateas on court three. Henrik Korsgaard pushed the Hokies ahead 2-1 as he downed #114 Spencer Furman 6-2, 6-2.
Tech's 66th-ranked Jason Kros gave Tech a 3-1 lead on court one where he knocked off 41st ranked Nick Stachowiak 6-2, 6-3.
The match was clinched by Carlo Donato on court four. Donato won the first set 6-4 aginst Duke's Sean Sculley. He dropped the second set 0-6, but rallied in the third for 6-1 victory.
On court six, Evan Fragistas won the first set and battled through being down in the tiebreaker 5-2 to eventually win the set 7-6(7) against Robert Levine.
The Hokies will be back on the court Friday, March 22 when they host Duke. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
