Quick notes on the Richmond series

  • Tech enters the midweek game with a 9-5 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the ACC, while Richmond is 8-2 overall and has not yet played an Atlantic 10 contest.
  • The Hokies are coming off a doubleheader split at Florida State on Saturday, winning the first game, 6-0, behind a strong pitching performance by Chris Gerard, who was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week and a National Player of the Week for his efforts (see release) in the first game. Tech dropped the nightcap to the Seminoles by a 5-2 decision (full release).
  • The Spiders have not played in more than a week, as their weekend series at Davidson was canceled due to the weather. They last played March 3 – a 6-3 loss to Rider – but they did take that weekend series with wins in a doubleheader on March 2 (6-1 and 10-1).
  • In one of the more contested series, the teams have faced each other 144 times and Richmond holds the overall record at 72-70-2, with one of those ties coming in the last meeting – a 10-10 back-and-forth affair that ended 10 innings, which was called due to darkness.
  • Prior to the tie on March 11, 2014, the Hokies had won the previous six meetings, including three at English Field at Union Park, where Tech holds a 33-30 overall mark against Richmond.
  • The Spiders last beat the Hokies on May 5, 2004 by a 10-8 decision in Blacksburg.
  • Tech's 70 wins over Richmond are the fourth most over any program in school history, behind VMI (129), Virginia (86) and William & Mary (82). The 144 games all-time versus Richmond are the third most against any opponent, behind Virginia (187) and VMI (178). On the flip side, the Spiders' 72 wins are the third most by any school against Tech, behind Virginia's 101 and North Carolina's 76.
