Peters, Schiesl and Zawadzki qualify for second NCAA Championship event

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Seniors Ashlynn Peters and Ben Schiesl along with freshman Noah Zawadzki turned in qualifying scores for their second events at NCAA Championships after the second day of NCAA Diving Zones in Annapolis, Maryland.

"We had a good day," said head diving coach Ron Piemonte. "Ben, Noah and Ashlynn all qualified for their second events going into NCAA Championships. I am very pleased for the three of them to move on and qualify for their second events. They had very solid performances today and were definitely on-track throughout the competition. I am very happy with the way they performed."

Peters finished second overall in the women's 1-meter with a score of 561.25 to qualify for her second event after hitting the mark yesterday in the 3-meter. Freshman Teagan Moravek also had a solid showing in the 1-meter with a ninth-place 521.30 finish.

"Teagan was right in the thick of things," said Piemonte. "She finished fourth in the prelims, but had an unfortunate mishap in the finals where she tipped her feet on the board during a dive. Overall though, she did a really nice job, I am very proud of her. The experience is going to help her as she moves forward into her sophomore year. Her finish puts her in a position if she can finish high enough in platform tomorrow she would be able to dive 1-meter at NCAAs as well."

On the men's side, Schiesl placed third overall with a 758.70 on the men's 3-meter. Zawadzki was 8th with a score of 673.55. With Zawadzki's automatic qualifying finish in yesterday's 1-meter event, he moves on the in the 3-meter event as well with a top-12 finish.

The Hokies will wrap up NCAA Diving Zones tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Maryland.

DAY ONE
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Seniors Ashlynn Peters and Ben Schiesl along with freshman Noah Zawadzki finished with automatic NCAA Championship qualifying scores on Monday during the first day of the NCAA Diving Zone A Championships in Annapolis, Maryland.

"I couldn't be prouder than having thee divers qualify on the first day," said head diving coach Ron Piemonte. "When you can qualify on the first day it's big, it helps you throughout the meet by taking some of the pressure off."

On the women's side, Peters scored a third-place 610.75 on the 3-meter event to earn the automatic bid to NCAAs. Joining her in the finals was freshman Izzi Mroz who finished 15th overall with a score of 516.80.

The Tech men qualified both divers in 1-meter as Zawadzki led the way with a 714.40 to place fourth. Schiesl finished just behind in fifth with a tally of 705.00.

"I am really excited for where we are in the meet right now," said Piemonte. "In addition to our three qualifiers, I was really proud of Izzi Mroz making the finals as a freshman. It will help her confidence going forward this week and into next year when she has that finals experience under her belt. A lot of times the first day of zones doesn't always go your way so this was overall a great day for us and gives us good momentum going forward."

The Hokies will be back in the pool Tuesday, March 12 for women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter beginning at noon.
