WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men's tennis team took the Deacs to three sets on four courts, but ultimately fell on Thursday afternoon to No. 2 Wake Forest, 6-1 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Tech battled the Deacs in the doubles point with Jason Kros and Brandon Perez claiming the 6-4 win on court two. The other two matches were tied at 5-5, but Wake was able to hold off the Hokies to win on both courts one and two with scores of 7-5.
In singles, Wake jumped out to the 3-0 lead with straight set wins on courts one and five, but the Hokies forced the Deacs to three sets on the other four courts.
Carlo Donato scored for the Hokies as he claimed the win on court four. After falling 6-4 in the first set to Yuval Solomon, Donato came back big to only give up one game in the next two sets, claiming the win 6-0, 6-1.
On court six, Evan Fragistas looked to pick up another point for the Hokies, winning the first set 7-6(3) over Siddhant Banthia. The Wake player responded to win the next two 6-0, 6-3 to secure the team win for the Deacs.
Henrik Korsgaard also battled it out to three sets as he faced No. 20 Bar Botzer on court two. The Tech junior gave up the first set 6-1, but came back to take the second 7-6(4) in a tiebreak. Botzer rallied for the 6-4 win in the third.
The final match on court was Alex Ribeiro at three where he took the opening set 7-6(5) over No. 41 Melios Efstathiou. Wake's player answered for a 6-3, 6-1 win to finish out the evening.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court Saturday, March 2 when the Hokies host No. 5 North Carolina in a 1 p.m. match at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
