Hokies sweep weekly ACC awards as Magarity, Mabrey recognized for outstanding play

Virginia Tech has earned a sweep of Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball weekly honors, with senior forward Regan Magarity named the ACC Player of the Week and Dara Mabrey the ACC Freshman of the Week, as announced Monday by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

The duo helped the Hokies earn consecutive road victories, at Pitt 74-58 and at Boston College 95-86. Tech's 95 points scored were the most for the program in an ACC contest, topping the previous mark of 90.

Magarity recorded a double-double with 14 points and an ACC career-high 17 in rebounds in Thursday's 74-58 win at Pitt, the Hokies' first in league play this season. The Norrköping, Sweden, native flirted with a triple-double in the win over the Panthers by adding seven assists.

With 30 points in Sunday's 95-86 comeback win at Boston College, Magarity finished with a career scoring high and pulled down 14 rebounds to secure her 15th double of the season. For the week, she shot 63 percent from the field while averaging 22 points and 15.5 rebounds.

Mabrey shot 67 percent for the week and averaged 24 points (22 versus Pitt and 26 versus Boston College) in the Hokies' two wins. The Belmar, New Jersey, native maintained her status as the ACC leader in 3-point shooting percentage by knocking down 10 of 14 shots from behind the arc.

Mabrey's big week included a career-high made six 3-pointers at Pitt and a career-high tying six assists against Boston College.

Virginia Tech is the first school to sweep the ACC women's basketball weekly awards since Dec. 27, 2016 when Syracuse's Alexis Peterson and Gabby Cooper collected POW and ROW honors respectively.

The Hokies are back home to host No. 2 Louisville on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Feb. 10 at noon. That game will be broadcast on Regional Sports Networks.
