Lacrosse hits the road for midweek tilt, travel to Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team heads to Norfolk, Virginia to face the Old Dominion Monarchs. First draw is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

The trip will be the Hokies' second road game of the season, following Saturday afternoon's setback at then-No. 15 Duke in a rainy game in Durham, North Carolina. The Hokies led 10-9 with the ball with under a minute to go, but a turnover led to the Blue Devils getting an opportunity to tie the game, which they did with 9 seconds left on the clock, ultimately sending the game into overtime. Duke secured the opening draw of the extra period and were able to score, securing an 11-10 victory.

Junior Julia Bolte recorded the first hat trick of her Virginia Tech career, leading the Hokies on the offensive end against the Blue Devils. Three other Hokies; Mary Claire Byrne, Paige Petty and Emma Crooks each scored twice and Taylor Caskey added a tally.

Byrne also forced four turnovers and grabbed four ground balls

Crooks, who is sixth in the ACC in draws per game, secured six Saturday.

In goal, Morgan Berman had another strong showing, making nine saves and corralling four ground balls. Berman leads the conference in total saves and ranks second in saves per contest at 8.40.

The Monarchs
Old Dominion is 1-4 on the season thus far, beating Winthrop this past Saturday by a score of 11-10 to notch their first victory after losses to Coastal Carolina, VCU, American and William & Mary.

On the offensive end, the Monarchs have three players in double figures, led by Glory Johnson (15 goals, 3 assists), Lilly Siskind (5 goals, 10 assists) and Sophia Richie (12 goals, 1 assist).

The Series
The matchup on Wednesday will be the 13th meeting all-time between the two schools. Tech leads 9-3 in the series, which began in 1996. The Hokies look to extend their winning streak to three against the Monarchs after winning the last two meetings by an average of 15 goals.

In the last trip to Norfolk, the Hokies fell in 2016 by a score of 10-7.

In last season's meeting in Blacksburg, Tech routed the visiting Monarchs 20-3. Kelci O'Donnell lead 11 goal scorers with four on the afternoon, her career high.
