CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team fell to No. 14 Virginia 6-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Tech (5-5, 1-2 ACC) fell behind after Virginia (9-2, 3-1 ACC) secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Natalie Novotna and Rita Pinto were able to get the 6-3 win on court one.
Freshman Samantha Gillas picked up Tech's lone singles victory of the day. After losing 6-4 in the first set, Gillas was able to rally 6-4 in the second to force a third. She downed Virginia's Sofia Munera 6-3 in the decider to pick up the win on court five.
Nina Sorkin battled against Amber O'Dell at four, playing three sets. In the opening set Sorkin picked up the 7-5 win but faltered in the second 6-0. O'Dell was able to win the third 7-5.
With the win, Virginia claims a point in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash. The Hokies lead the 2018-19 clash 7-5.5
The Hokies return to Blacksburg for a pair of weekend matches beginning with Florida State on Friday, March 1 at 3 p.m. Tech will host Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
