Opens in a new window ACC Results - Feb. 21

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Reka Gyorgy dropped 1.72 off her qualifying time to finish fourth in the 500 freestyle on Thursday during the second day of competition at the 2019 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

"We had a really good session," said assistant coach Steve Steketee. "I thought tonight was our best energy of the meet."

Gyorgy was in seventh during the first few laps of the 500 free before surging toward the end to place fourth with a time of 4:41.51. The mark places her third all-time at Virginia Tech behind Erika Hajnal's 4:40.03 and ahead of Lauren Ritter's 4:43.83, both of which were set in 2010. Gyorgy's time also gives her an NCAA B cut in the event.

Loulou Vos also qualified for the finals of the 500 free. She placed 19th and cut almost three seconds off her qualifying time to finish in 4:47.19.

Tech also qualified in the 50 free with Anna Landon making the C final after a morning swim-off in which she posted a B cut of 22.76. She came back in the evening to place 23rd overall with a time of 22.86.

In the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, Joelle Vereb, Anna Landon, Abby Larson and Abigail Andrusin swam a ninth place finishing time of 1:30.15. It sets the fourth fastest time in Tech program history.

"We started the evening out strong with great 500 frees from Loulou and Reka," said Steketee. "Anna took advantage of her opportunity after winning the swim off during the morning to qualify for the finals. Our 200 relay team finished off the evening with one of the fastest times in school history. I feel like we're gaining momentum every session."

The Tech men were in action on the boards today with Ben Schiesl and Noah Zawadzki both finishing in scoring position in the 3-meter event for the Hokies. Schiesl was 14th overall with a score of 314.50 while Zawadzki tallied a 16th place finish with 306.05.

Virginia Tech will be back in the pool on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. with the prelims of the 100 butterfly.
