Brizendine announces spring slate, program’s inclusion in the Spring College Program sanctioned by U.S. Soccer

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's soccer team will be featured in the 2019 edition of U.S. Soccer's Spring College Program, head coach Mike Brizendine announced Friday morning.

"It's fantastic to have been invited to the Spring Soccer Program and be able to partner with U.S. Soccer this year as we prepare for the 2019 fall season," Brizendine said. "What will excite the team, my staff and the fans will be the quality of competition that we will be able to test ourselves against. We will need these tough games for both our returning players and new faces as we continue to develop and approach next season."

The program features rules in accordance with U.S. Soccer Development Academy standards, with seven substitutions being available, with no re-entry into the game.

The games will also provide an additional opportunity for U.S. Soccer scouts to identify potential U.S. Olympic and National Team players and expand the player pool.

Fellow ACC programs Wake Forest and Pittsburgh are a part of the program as are second-year participants Clemson, Duke, Georgetown, North Carolina and Virginia.

The Spring College Program features two divisions, with the Hokies slotted in the North Division with Virginia, Pittsburgh and Georgetown. Each school will play each division opponent once with a classic scoring system, three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. Each team will make the playoffs and matchup with their counterpart in the opposite division who earned the same seed. Wake Forest will host one one-day event with all playoff games on April 13, signaling the conclusion of the program.
