Hokies sweep Delaware and Marshall

BLACKSBURG, VA. –  The Virginia Tech women's tennis team cruised past Delaware and Marshall defeating both teams 7-0 on Sunday at the Burrows- Burleson Tennis Center.
 
Tech (3-4, 0-1 ACC) opened the day against Delaware and got off to a fast start claiming the doubles points. Sarah Baron and Samantha Gillas picked up the 6-2 win on court one. To secure the doubles point for the Hokies Annie Clark and Emily Pence got the 6-4 win on court three.
 
The Hokies' winning ways would continue in to singles play. Junior Natalie Novotna never lost a game and soared to a victory 6-0, 6-0. On court three Nina Sorkin defeated Delaware's Caragh Courtney 6-2,6-3 to extend the Hokies lead to 3-0 overall.
 
Annie Clark secured the team win for the Hokies after picking up the match on court six. Shene Disbergen claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win on court five. On court four, Samantha Gillas was able to win the tiebreaker to claim the first set 7-6(5) before faltering in the second set 1-6. Gillas was able to win the super tiebreaker 10-2 in the third set to claim the victory.
 
Nika Kozar faltered in the first set against Vivia Laas but stormed back winning the second set 6-4 and claiming the super tiebreaker to secure the 7-0 sweep for the Hokies.
 
The Hokies momentum carried over into the second match of the day. Tech picked up right where they left off claiming the doubles points with wins on courts two and three. The Hokies clinched the doubles point with Emily Clark and Annie Pence teaming up for the 6-2 victory on court three over Madi Ballow and Victoria Walter.
 
Rita Pinto gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead in the match, knocking off Marshall's Matilde Mulatero 6-0, 6-0 on court six while Nika Kozar picked up the 6-2, 6-2 win at two.
 
Sammi Gillas secured the team win for the Hokies at four, knocking off Madi Ballow 6-4, 7-6(5).
 
Natalie Novotna pushed the Hokies to a 5-0 lead in the match defeating Anna Smith 7-5, 6-4. Elizabet Danailova battled back after losing the first set to win 6-7(4), 6-1, 1-0(6).
 
Tech wrapped up the day with Nina Sorkin knocking off Daniela Dankanych 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(5) on court three.
 
The Hokies will be back on the court, hosting Radford on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.
