Tech travels to Virginia in search of first ACC win, Clash points

BLACKSBURG – In the midst of a tough five-game stretch to open ACC play, with four of five games against ranked competition, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team will head to Charlottesville to face rival Virginia Thursday night. Tipoff from John Paul Jones arena is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

The Hokies are searching for their first conference win (0-2) after narrow losses in the opening week of league play at Miami, 68-61 and against No. 14 Syracuse, taking the Orange to overtime before falling 75-73. 
 
Taylor Emery has started brightly, leading the ACC in scoring in conference play after dropping 20 at Miami and another 27 points Sunday afternoon against Syracuse. The senior paces the Hokies at 18.5 points per game and has been shooting the ball at a .446 clip. 
 
As a team, the Hokies lead the nation in free throw shooting at 80 percent, with four players; Emery, Dara Mabrey, Trinity Baptiste and Rachel Camp all above that threshold. In the two conference games so far, the Hokies have been outshot from the charity stripe 48 to 11.  
 
The Hokies boast the best scoring defense in the conference (55.8) and have held opponents to shooting just 34 percent. 
 
Virginia (6-9, 0-2) is coming off of a 71-65 loss at Clemson Sunday afternoon. Forward Dominique Toussaint lead four Hoos in double figures with 16 points. On the season, Virginia is averaging 60 points per contest, while their opponents have managed 64.6. 
 
The Cavaliers kicked off conference play versus Florida State, getting clipped 63-61. 
 
SERIES HISTORY
Thursday's matchup will be the 60thmeeting in the series, which Virginia leads 49-10. The Cavaliers have won 22 of the past 24 meetings and have a 23-4 record in Charlottesville against the Hokies.
