Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. – Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference, the 2018 Women's Soccer All-ACC Academic Team features 55 of the conference's student-athletes and includes four Virginia Tech Hokies – Mandy McGlynn, a repeat selection, along with first timers Jordan Hemmen, Kelsey Irwin and Jaylyn Thompson – the most honorees on the team since the 2014 season.
McGlynn, who is working towards a degree in Human, Nutrition, Food & Exercise, earned her fourth postseason accolade since the end of her junior campaign as she was also named All-ACC First Team, US Soccer All-Atlantic Region Second Team and VaSID All-State First Team. Tech's goalkeeper was one of two named to last year's All-ACC Academic Team.
The native of Jacksonville, Florida turned in her best season while playing for the Hokies in her three-year career. She started all 22 matches, played every single minute (2,056:43, the second-most ever in a single season at the school) and stopped 90 shots (seventh) for a 79.6 save percentage (eighth). McGlynn also posted a 1.01 goals against average (T-fifth), recorded 10 shutouts (second), won 11 matches (T-third) and also became the first goalkeeper to play every minute of the season in goal for Tech since 2004 (Mallory Soldner, 1,800).
Hemmen, who is studying Biological Systems and Engineering, is named to her first postseason team with the selection. The junior from Seattle, Washington, was one of five Hokies to start all 22 matches during the season and, overall, played 1,998 minutes, which was the third most among field players. She also pushed her consecutive starts streak to 38 straight contests.
The midfielder/defender was second on the team with four goals scored, third on the team with eight points and tied for the team-lead with three game winners, which including the only goals in 1-0 victories over No. 6 Virginia (9/27), at Louisville (10/25), which put the Hokies into the ACC tournament, and versus Arkansas (11/16) in overtime to advance Tech into the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship's Round of 16.
Irwin, who graduated with a degree in criminology and is working towards a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in hospitality and tourism management, also earned her fourth postseason accolade since the end of her redshirt-junior campaign as she was also named All-ACC Third Team, US Soccer All-Atlantic Region Third Team and VaSID All-State First Team.
The San Diego, California native started every match and played all 2,056:43 minutes of action – Tech's only field player to log every minute of the year. She also added points on the offensive end, scoring three times and adding an assist for a total of seven points, fourth-most on the team. At Villanova (9/7), she notched her first career multi-goal game, and the first game winner of her collegiate career, with a pair of goals in the 3-0 victory.
Thompson, who is also working towards a degree in Human, Nutrition, Food & Exercise, is named to her first postseason team with the selection. The junior from Voorhees, New Jersey, was another one of the five Hokies to start all 22 matches during the season and, overall, played 2,035 minutes, which was the second most among field players.
The Tech defender also pushed her consecutive starts streak to a team-long 50 straight contests, which is the most by a Hokie since Madi Conyers started the last 56 matches of her collegiate career (2015-17).
This past season, Tech returned to both the ACC (first time since 2013) and NCAA Championships (first time since 2015), reached the 10-win plateau (10th time in 11 years) and the Sweet 16 (fifth time, first since 2014) and finish ranked in two final national polls (21st in the United Soccer Coaches poll and 23rd in the Top Drawer Soccer, all while, collectively, posting a program semester GPA of 3.4.
