BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech built a double-digit lead but Florida State's defensive pressure led to some easy opportunities for the twenty second-ranked Seminoles who escaped Cassell Coliseum with a 56-54 victory Sunday afternoon.
The win moves the Seminoles to 17-3 (5-2), while Tech slips to 13-7 (0-7).
Tech got out to a quick start with Trinity Baptiste's layup on the opening possession, followed by Dara Mabrey's three pointer and Regan Magarity's jumper leading to a Florida State timeout less than two minutes into the game.
Aisha Sheppard closed the first frame with a triple, as the Hokies lead 15-11.
A quick 9-2 run stretched Tech's advantage in the second quarter as the Hokies lead by 11. Florida State countered with a run of their own cutting the lead to just five before Kendyl Brooks grabbed a defensive rebound and found a streaking Taylor Emery who converted a layup as the time expired.
In the second half, FSU began to chip away, led by Nausia Woolfolk who scored 27 points in the game. The guard was 10 of 19 from the field and also had 6 steals on the defensive side of the court.
