Hokie ClubBLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech has three wrestlers in the semifinals at their respective weight classes and two other grapplers alive in the consolation bracket after day one at the Southern Scuffle held in Chattanooga, Tenn.
In tomorrow's semis, redshirt junior David McFadden (174 lbs.) will face Oklahoma State's Joe Smith, sophomore Hunter Bolen (184) will wrestle Binghamton's Lou DePraz and redshirt senior Tom Sleigh (197) will take on Bo Nickal (Penn State). Freshman Collin Gerardi (133) and redshirt senior (285) Billy Miller will wrestle in the consis.
MATCH NOTES
- Bolen continued his strong redshirt campaign on Tuesday with three bonus wins – two by major decision and one by fall – and a 3-1 decision over Oklahoma State's Jacobe Smith in the quarterfinals.
- Arguably the most impressive performance of the day came from Gerardi who took third-seeded and 15th-ranked Roman Bravo Young of Penn State to sudden victory overtime in the quarterfinals. Gerardi pushed the pace the entire bout but Bravo-Young got the takedown in the extra period to advance. Gerardi will face Air Force's John Twomey tomorrow in his first consolation match.
- Sleigh knocked off fourth-seeded Stephen Loiseau (Drexel) with a 5-2 decision in the quarterfinals and will face No. 1 Bo Nickal of Penn State tomorrow.
