BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech wrestling great and current volunteer assistant coach Ty Walz will compete in his first tournament as a member of the United States' senior men's freestyle national team beginning tomorrow morning at the Medved International in Belarus.

Competing at 97 kg, Walz will face Chaoqiang Yang of China in the first round. Walz defeated Yang in last year's bronze medal match at the U23 World Championships. The other side of the bracket features Walz's teammate Kyven Gadson, a 2015 NCAA champion at Iowa State and the second-ranked wrestler in the country at 97 kg.

Coverage of the event can be found on TrackWrestling.com. Matches are set to begin at 10:30 a.m. local time, 3:30 a.m. EST.

A three-time All-American for the Hokies from 2015-17, Walz placed second at the World Team Trials challenge tournament and won gold at the Bill Farrell Open during the 2018 freestyle season. He won the 2017 ACC championship at heavyweight and is one of only four Virginia Tech wrestlers to be named a three-time All-American.
