BLACKSBURG – Junior Jordan Hemmen and freshman Emma Steigerwald each notched their first goal of the season as the Virginia Tech women's soccer team registered its second win of 2018 on Sunday evening at Thompson Field with a 2-1 victory in nonconference action over the visiting High Point Panthers.
The Hokies (2-0-2) controlled most of the game, outshooting High Point 15-0 in the first half as they built a two-goal lead. Hemmen headed home a cross from Emily Gray in the 23rd minute to open the scoring. Steigerwald finished a combination of passes from Kristina Diana and Allyson Brown to put Tech up 2-0 in the 37th minute and records her first collegiate game winner as well.
However, High Point (1-3-0) made it close at the end as Caitlyn Shepherd converted on a penalty kick for her second goal of the season to cut the Panthers deficit to one.
Tech finished the game with a 24-5 advantage in shots and 7-0 in corners. Tech junior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made two saves to pick up her second win of the season and the 20th of her Tech career.
