BLACKSBURG –Virginia Tech will enter the 2018 season ranked 20th in the Associated Press Top 25, the poll announced Monday.
The Hokies' No. 20 ranking marks the second consecutive season that they will enter the year ranked in the AP Top 25. It's the first time that's happened since Tech earned a preseason AP ranking in eight straight seasons from 2005-12. Virginia Tech has either been ranked or receiving votes in the AP Top 25 since week four of head coach Justin Fuente's first season in 2016.
Tech's week one opponent, Florida State, is ranked 19th in the preseason poll. This year will also be the first time a ranked Virginia Tech squad will open with a ranked opponent in back-to-back seasons since 2009-10, when seventh-ranked Virginia Tech faced fifth-ranked Alabama in 2009 and when No. 10 Virginia Tech played No. 3 Boise State.
The first ever meeting in Lane Stadium between the Hokies and Notre Dame on Oct. 6 and a clash with defending Coastal Division champions Miami on Nov. 17 highlights the 2018 home slate. Thursday night football will also return to its rightful home in Blacksburg on Oct. 25 when the Hokies take on Georgia Tech. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
