WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team improved to 11-0 Thursday with a 69-57 victory over Dayton in the team's first game of the West Palm Invitational. Regan Magarity scored 20 points to lead all scorers and pulled down 10 rebounds securing her seventh double-double of the season in the process.
Magarity who recently joined the 1,000-rebound club in the Hokies' last game, jumped into the record book again Thursday passing Monet Tellier (class of 2014) for 10thall-time in scoring.
The game began with some back and forth action between the two clubs, with three ties and nine lead changes as each club struggled to gain a foothold in the matchup. The largest lead at that juncture had been five points.
In the first half, all seven Hokies who stepped onto the court scored.
Dayton moves to 4-6 with the result, ahead of their matchup with Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon. The Flyers were paced in scoring by Lauren Cannatelli's 24 points which included a 12 for 12 performance from the free throw line. Jayla Sciafe added 19 in 38 minutes of action.
But it was Regan Magarity who once again grabbed the headlines, with another fine performance that spurred the Hokies to another win. The forward shot 7 of 14 from the field and also dropped five assists, a team high on the afternoon. She now stands at 1,335 points, which is the 10th-most in Virginia Tech history.
Taylor Emery was dynamic, particularly in the second half, finishing with 16 points and 8 rebounds in the game.
Trinity Baptiste scored 14 points off of the bench, providing a spark
The Hokies shot 44 percent in the game, outscoring Dayton in the paint and capitalizing in 11 forced turnovers, scoring 10 points off of the Dayton mishaps.
The Hokies owned an 18-2 advantage in scoring off the bench.
NEXT GAME: The Hokies will matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, Dec. 21st at 12:15 p.m. on Massimino Court in the second game of the West Palm Invitational.
State lost to Butler 66-53 in their first game of the competition.
The Hokies and Buckeyes have never met in women's basketball.
