BLACKSBURG – Competing in the nation's toughest tournament outside of the NCAA Championships, No. 13 Virginia Tech had three wrestlers place at the Cliff Keen Invitational, which concluded on Sunday evening in Las Vegas, Nev.
Redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis made a run to the finals at 165 pounds but was defeated by 10th-ranked Isaiah White of Nebraska by decision, 2-0. His second-place finish was the highest for a Tech individual followed by redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky's fourth place finish at 184 and redshirt senior Tom Sleigh's seventh place finish at 197.
The Hokies finished in a tie for 11th in the team standings with 84.5 points.
DAY 2 NOTES
- After his loss in the semifinals, Zavatsky ripped off three wins in the consolation bracket to advance to the third-place match, including a 13-6 decision over ninth-ranked Max Dean of Cornell.
- Lewis leaves Vegas with quality wins over Brown's Jonathan Viruet (No. 17), Wyoming's Branson Ashworth (No. 6) and Northern Iowa's Bryce Steiert (No. 9), whom he defeated in semifinals, 2-0.
- In the toughest weight class, redshirt junior Korbin Myers went 2-2 at 133 after dropping a tight 6-4 decision to No. 11 Montorie Bridges of Wyoming in his first consolation match.
