The game was knotted at 33 heading into the locker room for the intermission.
Rutgers started the second half as the aggressors, scoring the first few baskets before the Hokies settled in. Later in the quarter Emery's triple gave the Hokies a 42-41 lead which they would not relinquish. Emery finished with a game high 22 points on 6 of 9 shooting. The senior also converted 7 of 9 free throw attempts.
Tech was spurred by the return of forward Alexis Jean to the court, with the Port St. Lucie, Florida native seeing her first minutes of the season. She hit her only shot, a three from the wing in seven minutes of action.
Other key notes:
• The Hokies held an advantage on the glass 32-30. Forward Regan Magarity had 14 rebounds.
• Magarity just missed out on another double-double, scoring nine points. She has six in eight games this season, tied for the most in the country.
• Tech forced 15 Scarlet Knight turnovers, while only committing 11 themselves, and just two in the second half of play.
• Kendyl Brooks scored 11 points, the first time she has recorded double figures this season.
Quoting Coach Brooks
• "Tonight was a really good win for us, I thought we came out and executed the game plan. We knew we had to match their physicality, we had to match their athleticism and I thought we did that, led by Regan Magarity. She was tremendous down low, just her presence and her ability to rebound the basketball gives us opportunities because they are relentless on the boards."
• "I thought we had productive games from Taylor Emery who I thought played extremely well the whole game. She made the right decisions all night for us."
• "I thought Kendyl got us going early which was very important and then Rachel Camp. She's been tremendous all year. Her stat line won't show how important she is to our team but she did a tremendous job of gutting it out, playing through some things and I'm very proud of her."
