Hokies gear up for UCF Thanksgiving Tournament in Orlando

UCF Thanksgiving Classic Notes

Orlando, Florida – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team has ventured south to Orlando, Florida during the holiday season to take part in the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament. The Hokies are set to face the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m. and the University of Richmond Spiders at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25.
 
Both contests will take place at CFE Arena on the campus of UCF.

Tech is 5-0 on the season, following Monday night's 74-59 win over Chattanooga. In that game, senior guard Taylor Emery scored 20 points to lead the Hokies, her first 20-point game of the season. 
 
The Hokies' offense has been clicking early to the tune of 80.4 points per game. As a team, Tech is shooting .462 from the field and an impressive .402 clip from 3-point range.
 
Tech has been led in the early goings by freshman guard Dara Mabrey, the only Hokie to score in double figures in every contest. She is averaging 16.6 points per game including dropping 26 against Monmouth, 3.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
 
Forward Regan Magarity, one of the best rebounders in the ACC and indeed the country currently ranks first nationally in total rebounds and defensive rebounds per game (11.0). Magarity, the school's all-time leader in rebounds, has four double-doubles this season and is averaging 13.8 per game. 
 
Villanova enters the Classic at 3-0 on the season following an 81-68 win over La Salle Tuesday night. Kelly Jakot scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats and Mary Gedakak added 16. On the season that duo are the leading scorers, with Jakot averaging 17.7 and Gedaka 16.3. 
 
The Wildcats also have wins over Hartford and Lehigh.
 
As a team, the Wildcats average 70.0 points per game and shoot the ball at a .419 clip from the field.
 
The Hokies and Wildcats have played seven times in their history, with Villanova winning three times. Most recently, the programs matched up in 2003, a 63-50 win for Tech. Kerri Gardin scored 14 points to lead four Hokies in double figures. Virginia Tech Assistant Coach Britney Anderson scored two points in the game during her freshman season.
 
Richmond is 1-4 on the season after a 55-69 loss at FAU on Sunday afternoon. The Spiders own losses against Georgetown, Fairfield and Wake Forest, while they have defeated Maryland Eastern Shore. 
 
The Spiders, who shoot .282 percent from the field are led in scoring by Alex Parsons who averages 12.0 points and 5.8 rebounds.
 
In the all-time series Richmond hold a 6-5 advantage with the most recent game taking place in Cassell Coliseum in 2013, a 64-56 loss for the Hokies.
 
Following the Classic, the Hokies will return home to face the Rutgers Scarlett Knights on Carilion Clinic Court on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. The game is a part of the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, in which the Hokies have won three games in a row in the competition.
