NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up competition on Saturday against Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. The men's squad picked up a pair of top-25 wins, defeating No. 25 Pitt, 239-112 and No. 18 Notre Dame in a close 180-173 decision. On the women's side, the Hokies had the 189.5-163.5 win over the Panthers, but fell to No. 13 Irish 256-97.
"Wow, I could not be happier for our men's and women's swimming and diving teams," said head coach Sergio Lopez Miro. "These past two days they have shown how much they care and why they became Hokies. After 12 hours on a bus, we came out Friday and stayed the course from the first race and made a big statement. The team understands every day more and more how to support and empower one another as a TEAM and that is how we want to create sustainable success. So many things to mention that I could write a book."
HOKIES MEN
Tech got the second day started off the same as the first by winning the opening relay. The Hokies took the top spot with a time of 1:28.65 off swims from Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock, Blake Manoff and Ian Ho.
The Hokies followed up with a second-place finish in the 500 free as Lane Stone swam a 4:22.30. Tech finished just outside the top-3 in the 200 IM with Sam Tornqvist, Keith Myburgh and Simon Shi finishing fourth (1:50.05), fifth (1:51.06) and sixth (1:51.17), respectively.
Ho got the Hokies back in the win column as he claimed the 50 free in 19.91. Hallock finished in third with a time of 20.37. Manoff secured another top finish for the Hokies, swimming 1:47.17 in the 200 fly.
The Hokies got the two, three finish in the 100 back with Lamparella swimming 48.58 and Tornqvist a 49.03. Shi took fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.77.
Stone swam a time of 1:36.32 to win the 200 free for the Hokies.
Tech wrapped up the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay as Lamparella, Ho, Hallock and Henry Claesson turned in a time of 2:56.39.
"The last event of the meet was one of the key moments for the men's team. Notre Dame led by two-points going into it. We had to finish first and place high with the B relay in order to get the team win. We decided to put a freshman, Henry Claesson, anchoring the A relay. He split with a 44.49 to give us first while Lane Stone (So.) split a 44.03 to help the B claim fourth, securing the meet. It is really impressive considering that Lane swam and won the 200 free 15 minutes earlier."
On the boards, the Hokies went one, two on the men's 3-meter with freshman Noah Zawadzki scoring 391.15 while Ben Schiesl posted a score of 389.30.
"Very pleased with the Hokie divers. It was a big weekend for senior Ben Schiesl, getting a crucial win and second-place finish. Freshman Noah Zawadzki stepped up with his first win on 3-meter, and a second-place finish on 1-meter as he and Ben combined to complete the one, two sweep for the Hokie men on both boards."
HOKIES WOMEN
The Hokies opened day two with a second place 1:43.19 finish in the 200 medley team of Emily Meilus, Baillie Cameron, Kayla Purcell and Abby Larson.
In the 500 free, the Hokies finished just outside the top-3 with LouLou Vos taking fourth with a time of 4:57.97. Reka Gyorgy followed up by finishing second in the 200 IM in 2:03.19.
The Hokies added another top-3 finish off of Anna Landon's 23.45 to finish third in the 50 free. Her fellow freshman, Abby Larson, was fifth in the event with a time of 23.53. Sydney Pesetti took fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.40.
Tech had the four, five finish in the 200 breaststroke. Cameron placed with a time of 2:21.16 while Annalee Johnson finished just behind with 2:21.62. Vos turned in another fourth place finish this time in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.96.
The Hokies wrapped up the swimming events with Abigail Andrusin, Larson, Landon and Purcell placing third in 3:25.96.
"The Hokie women also did an amazing job swimming faster times than last week and beating a strong Pitt team," Lopez Miro said. "Overall super happy for the energy we showed and the pride this team has to be Hokies."
Ashlynn Peters placed second for the women on the 1-meter boards, scoring 282.85.
"Great weekend for senior Ashlynn Peters, with a first and second place finish on the boards. Teagan Moravek and Regan Westwood also had very good events to add some great points on the women's side."
UP NEXT: Members of the Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams will be participating next weekend in the inaugural ACC/BigTen Challenge.

DAY ONE
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams have solid first day against Pittsburgh and No. 13/18 Notre Dame. Tech leads the Panthers with the mean holding a 117-49 advantage while the women are up 92.5-74.5. Against the Irish, the Hokies' men are down by just seven, 87-80. The women are down 122-45.
HOKIES MEN
Tech came strong out of the gates, winning the 200 free relay as Ian Ho, Jake Lamparella, Thomas Hallock and David Herbert turned in a time of 1:19.64. Ho's leadoff of 19.88 set a Rolfs Aquatic Center record.
The Hokies took third in the 400 IM as freshman Keith Myburgh finished in 3:54.39. Sam Tornqvist got the Hokies back in the win column, claiming the top spot in the 200 backstroke, 1:47.19.
Tech went two, three in the 100 breaststroke with Simon Shi finishing in 55.52 followed by teammate Norbert Szabo just a 100th of a second later, 55.53.
The Hokies again finished strong in the 100 freestyle off a first place 44.23 from Ho and a third place 44.56 by Lamparella. Lane Stone added a second-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle, finishing with a time of 9:13.84.
Tech closed out the first day with a two, three finish in the 400 medley relay. Lamparella, Shi, Blake Manoff and Ho swam a 3:16.13. The quartet of Tornqvist, Szabo, Henry Claesson and Hallock turned in a time of 3:18.49.
On the boards, the Hokies took the top-2 spots in the 1-meter. Ben Schiesl finished with a score of 391.65 while freshman Noah Zawadzki tallied 331.05.
HOKIES WOMEN
The Hokies opened with a fourth place, 1:33.39 finish in the 200 free off swims from Abby Larson, Abigail Andrusin, Anna Landon and Danielle Griggs.
Reka Gyorgy got the Hokies in the top-3 as she finished third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.06. Kayla Purcell followed with a fourth-place finish in the 100 fly, 55.91.
In the 100 breaststroke, Baillie Cameron claimed third in 1:04.96 while Andrusin added third in the 100 free with a time of 51.00.
Freshman LouLou Vos added another third place for the Hokies, turning in a time of 10:09.87.
Tech closed out the swimming events with a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Emily Meilus, Cameron, Purcell and Andrusin finished with a time of 3:47.06.
In the women's 3-meter, the Hokies had a one, three finish. Ashlynn Peters took the top spot with a tally of 331.85 while Teagan Moravek scored 299.65.
