Hokies improve to 5-0 Monday night with 74-59 victory over Chattanooga

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's basketball team used an 11-point run in the first quarter to establish control and never wavered, advancing to 5-0 on the season Monday night with a 74-59 victory at Cassell Coliseum. 
 


 
Taylor Emery led the Hokies, scoring 20 points including 12 in the second quarter. 
 
Freshman guard Dara Mabrey impressed again, shooting 50 percent from the field, including knocking down four 3-point field goals.  She also had two boards and two helpers in the game.

The Mocs fell to 2-2 on the season. Guard Lakelyn Bouldin scored a game-high 21 points on 22 shots on the evening.
 
Tech struggled with foul trouble all game, necessitating a smaller lineup for much of the contest. Despite the adversity, the Hokies had an edge on the glass 37-35.
 
Sophomore Aisha Sheppard played well, contributing in a variety of ways, scoring nine points, grabbing five rebounds and recording a career high six assists. 
 
 
Notable:
 

  • The Hokies made 10 3-point field goals, the second consecutive game that they have hit in double figures.
  • Mabrey scored in double figures again, with 14 points. She is the only Hokie to score 10 or more in every contest this season.
  • Magarity registered her 36thcareer double-double and fourth in five games this season.

 
Next Up: Tech will head south to Orlando, Florida to participate in the UCF Thanksgiving Classic. The Hokies will tip against Villanova on Saturday, Nov. 24 at noon and Sunday will face the Richmond Spiders at 11 a.m. 
 
Next Time at Home: The Hokies return to Carilion Clinic Court on Wednesday, Nov. 28 to take on Rutgers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tech has won each of the last three contests in the competition including last season's 96-49 victory at Illinois.
