BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's soccer team once again was recognized this fall for outstanding work in the classroom, earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award at the college level, which recognizes exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2017-18 academic year.
Tech has earned this recognition each of the past three seasons and seven of the past nine under Head Coach Mike Brizendine. The Hokies were one of four ACC men's soccer programs to be recognized this year.
In 2017-18, Tech had 19 student-athletes record grade point averages of 3.0 or higher.
A total of 773 collegiate teams (289 men, 484 women) earned the Team Academic Award, including 191 schools who had both their men's and women's programs among the recipients, with Virginia Tech being one of those schools.
The men's soccer program has been recognized a total of eight times (2003, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018), with all but one of those years coming under Brizendine.
The United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of high school and college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full school year.
College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point of average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster.
