NCAA Championship Third Round Notes for the Hokies
Tech continues NCAA postseason run at No. 3 North Carolina
- The Hokies are 2-5-1 against ranked opponents this season, including a pair of 2-0 loss to UNC earlier this season (Oct. 13 in Blacksburg and Oct. 28 in Cary). They picked up their first victory over a ranked for with a 1-0 decision over No. 6 Virginia at Thompson Field on Sept. 27. The win marked the team's first victory over a top 10 program since Nov. 8, 2013 (vs. No. 1 Virginia, 4-2 in the ACC Championship semifinal).
- Prior to this year's win, the Hokies had not beaten a ranked foe in 14 matches - since Oct. 4, 2015, when Tech went on the road and beat No. 22 Duke (4-2). The team was 0-9-5 between the two wins.
- All-time, the Hokies are 30-84-13 (28.1 win percentage) against ranked foes, but have been better under Adair over the past eight seasons at 17-37-7 (33.6), prior they were 13-47-6 (24.2).
- This will be the 19th all-time meeting against North Carolina. Tech's last win over the Tar Heels was on Oct. 23, 2011 at Thompson Field (have lost eight straight since). The Hokies are 0-9 all-time against UNC away from Blacksburg.
- UNC has been ranked in the Top 10 in 16 of the previous 18 meetings.
Quick takeaways from Friday's win
- All-time in NCAA postseason matches, Tech is now 7-8-0 away from Blacksburg, including a 4-4-0 mark on a neutral site.
- Tech is now 12-9-1 overall in 10 NCAA postseason appearances and was one of five unseeded programs to make this year's Sweet 16, which included three schools from the ACC.
- The league put seven teams into the Round of 16 this year, the second most ever for them. In 2013, the ACC had an NCAA record eight teams make the third round.
- The only other time the Hokies registered back-to-back shutouts in the NCAA tournament was 2013, when Dayle Colpitts and Tech registered four straight on its way to the College Cup.
- McGlynn now has 22 career shutouts (second all-time) and 29 career wins (also second all-time), while her 11 wins this year are tied for the third most in a single season and her 10 shutouts are second most to Colpitts (11, 2013).
- McGlynn has now played in the second most ever minutes in a single season for the Hokies behind Colpitts (2,443 in 2013)
- Jaylyn Thompson started her 49th straight match for Tech, the longest consecutive streak on the team, while McGlynn has the second longest at 40.
- Two Hokies have played every minute of the season (1,966): McGlynn and Kelsey Irwin.
In 2018 Tech games, scoring first is critical
- This season in Tech matches, only once did the team that scored the day's first goal not go on to win the match, and that was then-No. 22 Georgetown, which resulted in a 1-1 draw back on Aug. 19.
- Since then, the team that scored the contest's first goal is 18-0, with the Hokies holding an 11-0 record while the opponents are 7-0, with one double overtime 0-0 tie in the mix (Sept. 2 at Georgia).
- In fact, once the first goal has been scored, the team with the lead has never relinquished it - and has actually gone on to register a shutout in 13 of those contests, with Tech earning eight of them.
- In all, Tech and its opponents have combined for 18 shutouts this year (Tech 10, Opp 8), which just past for the 2011 squad that had the previous most ever (Tech 11, Opp 6), who played 23 matches that season.
- The good news, when the Hokies score a goal, they are 11-1-1 this year.
- Lastly, when reaching the half in a scoreless tie, the Hokies are 4-1-2 and overall, they are 4-1-3 when the match is tied at the break.
