Mabrey’s big night fuels Hokies Friday night

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech started slow, but freshman point guard Dara Mabrey turned in a career performance in just her fourth collegiate game, tallying 26 points to lead the Hokies to an 82-49 victory over the visiting Monmouth Hawks on Carilion Clinic Court on Friday night. 
 
Mabrey, a freshman from Belmar, New Jersey just miles from the Monmouth campus helped dig the Hokies out of a deficit in the first half. The Hawks came out and hit four 3-pointers before the first media timeout of the game, all courtesy of Sierra Green to lead 17-9. 
  After that quick start, the Hokies finished the quarter on a 10-2 run after Rachel Camp's free throws to close the gap to just two points.
 
Taylor Emery connected on a triple to give the Hokies their first lead at 4:24 in the second quarter, and Tech would only continue to apply pressure going on a 10-2 spurt to close the half and head into the locker room up 39-33.
 
In the third, Tech really began to find its rhythm with Emery, Mabrey and Camp hitting consecutive triples to begin, and junior Kendyl Brooks chipping in later in the frame. 
 
Regan Magarity recorded another double-double, her third of the season with 13 points and a game high 14 rebounds. 
 
Mabrey finished the game with 26 points on 9 of 13 shooting. The point guard also grabbed seven boards and tallied two assists in the game. 
 
Notable:

  • As a team the Hokies knocked down 12 3-pointers, their highest total of the season, coming from seven different players

 


 

  • Tech continues to share the ball well, assisting on 18 of 27 field goals on the night
  • The Hokies took advantage from the free throw line, going 16 of 18 
  • Tech held an advantage on the glass 49-36 

Next Up: The Hokies are back on Carilion Clinic Court on Monday, Nov. 19 to take on Chattanooga at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcasted on ACC Network Extra.
