Duke hands Hokies loss with two second-half goals

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 17 Duke and Virginia Tech played to a scoreless tie through 45 minutes, but a strong second-half attack by the Blue Devils was the difference as they scored twice to register a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Koskinen Stadium.

Duke (10-2-2, 4-1-1 ACC) held a 3-0 advantage in shots over the course of the first half, but managed 13 in the second half, including nine on net. Blue Devil Kayla McCoy scored her eighth goal of the season in the 67th minute to put the first tally of the board, while Karlie Paschall added an insurance tally with just under five minutes left off a free kick.

Tech (7-4-3, 3-3-0 ACC) had just two shots on the day, with Karlie Johnson recording the lone shot of goal. The Hokies' goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made a season-high eight saves in the match, which also tied her for the second-most in her career.

FROM COACH ADAIR
"I was pleased with the team's effort and commitment to the game plan today. I think we played well and really went toe-to-toe with them in the first half. In the second half, Duke wore us down a bit and we didn't recover well from that. They just put us under a bit of pressure as the game wore on. The team gave all they could, but just came up a little bit short today against a very difficult opponent. Duke is a good, solid team. But the team did a good job on the day. I was pleased with their effort and their commitment to the game. Moving on, we'll recover from this, a tough stretch, of back-to-back two ACC soccer games each weekend, and we look forward to a nice homestand with UNC coming in on Saturday night."
