ACC Championship Notes for the Hokies
Tech opens postseason at No. 3 North Carolina
- The Hokies are 1-4-1 against ranked opponents this season, including a 2-0 loss to UNC this season (Oct. 13 in Blacksburg). They picked up their victory with a 1-0 decision over No. 6 Virginia at Thompson Field on Sept. 27. The win marked the team's first victory over a top 10 program since Nov. 8, 2013 (vs. No. 1 Virginia, 4-2 in the ACC Championship semifinal).
- Prior to this year's win, the Hokies had not beaten a ranked foe in 14 matches - since Oct. 4, 2015, when Tech went on the road and beat No. 22 Duke (4-2). The team was 0-9-5 between the two wins.
- All-time, the Hokies are 29-83-13 (27.5 win percentage) against ranked foes, but have been better under Adair over the past eight seasons at 16-36-7 (33.1). Prior, they were 13-47-6 (24.2), so already more wins and almost nine points better.
- This will be the 18th all-time meeting against North Carolina.
Hokies history in the ACC tournament
- This will be the sixth time Tech has qualified for the ACC Championship - which includes making it five of six seasons from 2008-13 (missed it in 2012).
- The Hokies are 3-5-2 overall in the ACC postseason and made the ACC title game twice - in 2008 and 2013. They lost to UNC in 2008 and Florida State in 2013 (1-0).
- Overall, Tech is 0-1-2 versus Florida State, 0-2 versus North Carolina, 1-0-1 versus Virginia, 1-0 against Notre Dame and Wake Forest, and 0-1 against Duke.
- The Hokies are 2-2-1 in their prior opening round games of the league tournament.
Tech on the bubble for NCAA tournament, but history is on its side
- The Hokies clinched the eighth and final spot in the ACC tournament with a 1-0 win at Louisville on Thursday night, the team's fifth win in conference play.
- In its history, Tech is 5-for-5 in advancing to the NCAA Championship in the same season it has played in that year's ACC Championship.
- Also, the Hokies are 9-for-9 in earning an NCAA postseason bid when they've won at least four matches in league play.
- Tech's 15 points in ACC play this season are tied for the fourth-most ever earned. Again, history is on its side, because whenever the team has earned at least 12 points, they've advanced to the NCAA tournament.
- The most points for Tech in a league season was 28 (in 13 matches in 2013), but in 10 league matches, the highest was 19 (2015), 18 (2009) and 15 (2004 & 2018).
- The Hokies also accomplished that after playing one of the toughest ACC schedules this season. Tech is the only team in the ACC tournament that faced every other team in the playoffs - notching a 2-5-0 mark against the field.
In 2018 Tech games, scoring first is critical
- This season in Tech matches, only once did the team that scored the day's first goal not go on to win the match, and that was then-No. 22 Georgetown, which resulted in a 1-1 draw back on Aug. 19.
- Since then, the team that scored the contest's first goal is 15-0, with the Hokies holding an 9-0 record while the opponents are 6-0, with one double overtime 0-0 tie in the mix (Sept. 2 at Georgia).
- In fact, once the first goal has been scored, the team with the lead has never relinquished it - and has actually gone on to register a shutout in 10 of those contests, with Tech earning six of them.
- So, the good news is - when the Hokies score a goal, they are 9-1-1 this season.
- Lastly, in just five matches this year both teams have scored, which if holds, would tie for the fewest ever in a single season done only three other times, 1996 and 2005 (5-of-19) and 2017 (5-of-18).
