Hokies put four past Tribe Tuesday night in dominant victory

BLACKSBURG – Two goals either side of halftime helped the Virginia Tech men's soccer team defeat visiting William & Mary 4-0 Tuesday night. The win moves the Hokies' record to 8-4-2 with three regular season matches to play, finishing at Notre Dame, at Davidson and at home on Thompson Field versus the Duke Blue Devils.

The action started in the early minutes as William & Mary's Ryder Bell looked dangerous cutting in from the left flank onto his favored right foot and fired a low shot at Mathijs Swaneveld's goal, which the keeper saved with his legs. The forward took two more shots on the night, neither of which troubled the Hokies' defense.

Tech found the back of the net in a similar fashion to their first goal in the win over Pitt last week, playing in a dangerous ball from the wing and forcing a deflection from the defense, as the ball crossed the line for an own goal in the 29thminute.

The Hokies struck again just four minutes later as James Kasak used his pace on the left wing to beat his man and cross the ball in to the path of Kristo Strickler who guided his volley into the back of the net. For Strickler, the tally was his team leading sixth of the season, while Kasak recorded his fifth assist, also the best mark on the squad.

The second half was much of the same as the Hokies continued to apply pressure outshooting the Tribe 15-7 and earning more corner kicks, 6-2.

In the late stages of the match, Tech turned the screw adding two late goals, first through Nico Quashie in the 78thminute. The junior forward latched onto a ball headed from Sivert Haugli over the back line and dispatched hi shot past the keeper to make it 3-0 Tech.

Within five minutes, the ball was in the net again, this time from Brendan Moyers, his first tally of the season. Strickler turned his man with the ball and slipped in Moyers who made a run at the top of the box. The midfielder from Earlysville, Virginia used a one-touch finish with his left foot to find the net.

In goal, Swaneveld was responsible for three saves, and was able to keep his fourth shutout of the season.

Tech's defense stifled All-American Antonio Bustmante all night long, only allowing one shot on goal and no clear scoring opportunities.

Next up: Tech hits the road for a match on Friday night at Notre Dame. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

Last season the Hokies defeated the then-No. 1 Fighting Irish 2-1 behind two goals from first team All-ACC performer Marcelo Acuna.
