Hokies men defeat Duke, women falter in season opener

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's swimming and diving team defeated ACC foe Duke 178.5-121.5 on Saturday afternoon at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Tech's women came up short, falling to the No. 22 Blue Devils 172-123.
 
HOKIES MEN
Tech's men claimed wins in 10 of the 18 scoring events beginning with freshman Brennen Doss edging teammate Michael Craddock in the 1000 freestyle. Doss turned in a time of 9:33.34 while Craddock finished in 9:34.64.
 
Norbert Szabo nabbed the next top finish for the Hokies as he swam 56.27 in the 100 breaststroke. Simon Shi finished just behind with a time of 56.70.
 
The Hokies followed up with a one, two, three finish in the 200 fly, led by freshman Blake Manoff, turning in a time of 1:51.30. Sam Tornqvist was second in 1:51.50 and rookie Dylan Eichberg placed third in 1:52.50.
 
Jake Lamparella was on top in the 100 free, finishing in a time of 44.78 with Thomas Hallock in second (45.94). Tornqvist nabbed first in the 200 back (1:47.20) and Shi took first in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.01). Freshman Keith Myburgh was second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.32.
 
Craddock and Doss switched places in the 500 free event as the veteran Hokie turned in a time of 4:38.99 followed by Doss' 4:39.83.
 
Manoff took his second event of the day with a 49.38 in the 100 fly. Szabo also took another top finishing, leading a quartet of Hokies that went one, two, three, four in the 200 IM. Szabo turned in a time of 1:50.13 followed by Tornqvist (1:51.37), Myburgh (1:53.88) and Shi (1:54.18).
 
Senior Ben Schiesl also turned in a first place finishing, taking the men's 1-meter with a score of 384.52. Freshman Noah Zawadzki was second on the 3-meter, tallying a score of 381.65.

HOKIES WOMEN
On the women's side, the Hokies opened with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.63 off swims from Emily Meilus, Joelle Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Abby Larson.
 
The Hokies followed with a two, three finish in the 1000 freestyle as Reka Gyorgy turned in a time of 10:11.75 and freshman LouLou Vos posted a 10:13.38. Vos competed in the next event as well, finishing second in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.52.
 
Tech's women got their first win as Joelle Vereb took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.94. Baillie Cameron was third in the event (1:05.23).
 
Vereb again got on the board with a third place finish in the 50 free (23.72) where she finished just behind freshman Anna Landon who was second with a time of 23.69.
 
The Hokies got a second place finish in the 100 free as well, with a 51.63 from Abigail Andrusin. Gyorgy was second in the 200 backstroke (2:01.31) and was followed by Meilus' 2:03.45 in third. Cameron added a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.69).
 
Vos had her third top-3 finish of the meet, taking second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.35. Vereb continued her top-3 finishes with second second in the 100 fly (55.42) followed by Leah Rogers in third (56.69).
 
Gyorgy nabbed top finish for the Hokies in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.23. The Hokies wrapped up the swimming events with a top finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:27.81 from Larson, Andrusin, Landon and Danielle Griggs.
 
Ashlynn Peters turned in a pair of second place finishes on the boards with a score of 311.70 on the 3-meter and 281.85 on the 1-meter. Freshman Teagan Moravek was third on the 1-meter (273.08).
 
The Hokies will be back in the pool Oct. 26-27 when they host Ohio State and Penn State in a two-day meet at the Christiansburg, Aquatic Center.
