Donato moves into quarterfinals at Southern Intercollegiates

ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech sophomore Carlo Donato continued to advance as he moved into the quarterfinals on Saturday during the second day of the 51st Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Georgia.
 
On a day with just one round of main draw singles, Donato made the best of it as he knocked off Gardner-Webb's top player Maximilian Scholl in a hard-fought three set battle. Donato gave up the first set 6-4, but came back to win the second in a tiebreak of 7-6(2). In the final set, Donato again held on in a tiebreak as he claimed it 7-6(5).
 
In the Division I consolation draw, Jason Kros knocked off Barry's Daniel Ventura in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Chase Bernstine also claimed a win in the consolation draw of the other flight as he defeated Gardner-Webb's Stefano Puga 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Evan Fragistas claimed his consolation match, defeating FAU's Alvaro Fernandez-Horta 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
 
The Hokies were also in action in doubles today with Kros and Donato pairing up to win the opening round match against Kennesaw State's Drew Lahey and Bryan Tiara 8-5. In the next round the pair were edged by Dartmouth's duo of Dave Horneffer and Casey Ross, 8-7(5).
 
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Sunday morning with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles.
