Hokies chalk up third straight ACC victory on Sunday

BLACKSBURG – Just 23 seconds before halftime, Virginia Tech's Karlie Johnson gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with her fifth goal of the season and Kristina Diana added her first of the year in the second half to help Tech to a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in ACC action at Thompson Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Hokies registered their third straight conference victory – all by shutout – and improve to 3-1-0 on the season in the ACC, which is currently tied for second in the league. It's the fourth 3-1 start or better for Tech in ACC play (2009, 4-0; 2013 and 2015, 3-1) while it's just the second time in school history the Hokies have recorded three straight shutouts against ACC opponents (2013, Sept. 15-22, vs. Syracuse, at #21 Maryland, at Boston College).

Tech (7-2-3, 3-1-0 ACC) also saw goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn need just one save to post her seventh shutout of the year, which is tied for the second most ever in a single season at the school (Dayle Colpitts, 11, 2013). She also recorded her 19th career shutout and 25th career win for the Hokies.

Pittsburgh fell to 4-6-1 on the season and 0-4-0 in league play.

  • The Hokies are 3-3-0 all-time on Sept. 30, including winners of three in a row and 2-0 at home.

  • Johnson leads the team with five goals, 10 points and two game winners.
  • Diana tallied a career-high three points today, adding an assist (the sixth of her career) on Johnson's game winner. The goal was the fourth of her career (first since Oct. 6, 2016 at Syracuse). She is tied for the team lead with three assists (Emily Gray) and second in points with five (Gray and Kelsey Irwin).

  • Jaylyn Thompson started her 40th straight match for Tech, the longest consecutive streak on the team, while McGlynn has the second longest at 31.
