Seufer wins at Paul Short Run cross country meet

Virginia Tech runner Peter Seufer outlasted the competition at the Paul Short Run, winning the men's 8K gold race at the meet held Saturday morning at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on Lehigh University's campus in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  
 
Seufer led a strong performance by the Tech men's team, which came in second out of 41 teams. The Hokies scored 80 points, finishing just three points behind winner Utah State in the battle for the team title.
 
Seufer ran the race in 24 minutes, 11 seconds and beat Hofstra's Meshack Kipchirchir by 18-hundredth of a second. The redshirt junior from Lynchburg, Virginia paced a Tech contingent that placed four runners in the top 10.
 
The Hokies' Fitsum Seyoum, Ben Fleming and Bashir Mosavel-Lo came in eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. Seyoum and Fleming both finished in a time of 24:40, while Mosavel-Lo ran the course in 24:41.
 
Jack Joyce (52nd), Osman Humeida (64th) and Owen Buck (127th) accounted for the rest of the Hokies' scoring.
 
On the women's side, Lauren Berman came in 12th in the women's 6K gold race, running the race in a time of 20:57. The senior from Fairfax, Virginia led the way for a Tech women's team that came in fifth out of 41 teams in the team competition, scoring 256 points. Yale won with 118 points, followed by Georgia, Utah State and Cornell.
 
Sara Freix finished 28th with a time of 21:26, while Sarah Edwards was 38th with a time of 21:37. Kayla Richardson (65th), Emily Schiesl (113th), Ellie Brush (151st), and Ella Breidenstine (153rd) rounded out the scoring for the Hokies.
 
OTHER NOTES
• Seufer's win marked the second of his collegiate career. In 2016, he won the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite.
 
• Seyoum's eighth-place finish tied for his best career finish, as he came in tied for eighth in the 6K Hokie Invite in 2016.
 
UP NEXT
Both Virginia Tech squads return to action Oct. 12 when they travel back to the Keystone State to compete in the Penn State National Open. The meet, which starts at 11 a.m., serves as the final one before the ACC Championship slated for Oct. 26.
