BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech freshman Samantha Gillas leads the women's tennis team by winning the Honor flight on Sunday at the Hokie Fall Invitational.
Gillas battled against JMU's Daniela Voloh. In the opening set, Gillas won 6-4 but dropped the second set to Voloh by the same score. Gillas powered back in the final set to win it 6-3.
Shene Disbergen also had a win for the Hokies as she took a win the back draw finals of the Honor draw. The Tech junior won the first set 7-5, but faltered to Radford's Anastasia Belyaeva 6-2 in the second. In the super tiebreak, Disbergen responded to win it 10-7.
In the Duty draw, Emily Pence knocked off Radford's Katey Fruehauf 6-3, 7-5. Pence was also in the finals of the Loyalty doubles, pairing up with teammate Annie Clark. The pair was edged 8-6 by JMU's Emma Petersen and Daria Afanasyeva.
The Hokies will be back on the court beginning this week with Natalie Novotna competing at the ITA All-American Championships. Several other Hokies will be traveling to the Old Dominion Invitational, Oct. 5-7.

DAY TWO
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women's tennis freshman Samantha Gillas moves into the finals of the Honor flight with two wins on Saturday at the Hokie Fall Invitational. Teammates Annie Clark and Emily Pence advance to the Loyalty doubles finals.
Gillas defeated JMU's Daria Afanasyeva 6-4, 7-5 to move into the semifinals where she faced Iowa State's Ekatering Grib. The Tech newcomer secured the win in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to advance to Sunday's final round.
In doubles, Emily Pence and Annie Clark paired up to win in the Loyalty semifinals. The Tech pair rolled past Iowa State's Reggie Espindola and Caroline Gibbens, 8-3.
In the back draw of Honor flight, Shene Disbergen claimed a pair of wins. She opened with a 6-4, 7-5 win over App State's Teodora Sevo. In the next match, Disbergen dropped WVU's Giovanni Caputo 7-5, 6-3.
The Hokies will be back on the court at 9 a.m. with the final round of doubles. The final round of singles will follow.

DAY ONE
BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team advanced in both singles and doubles on Friday during the opening day of the 2018 Hokie Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Nika Kozar claimed a first round win in the Ut Prosim draw, rolling to the 6-1, 6-3 decision over JMU's Abby Amos. Newcomer Samantha Gillas also secured the win, advancing in the Honor flight with the 6-4, 6-1 decision over Delaware's Adetayo Adetunji.
In doubles, Gillas paired up with Shene Disbergen to knock off Iowa State's Margarita Timkova and Ekaterina Grib, 8-6. The Tech duo secured the win in the second round after earning a first round bye.
Freshman Annie Clark paired up with veteran Emily Pence to knock off Georgia Southern's Paige Christian and Elizabeth Goines 8-4 to advance in the Loyalty doubles. Clark and Pence had a first round bye and move into the semifinals after the win.
The Hokies will be back on the court Saturday with 9 a.m. doubles. Two rounds of singles will follow.
